Methodology: The Setutila Digital Critical Edition
Setutila is a slow-paced, quality-conscious, long-term initiative dedicated to the preservation and critical study of the Bhāratīya-paramparā with deep respect for the guru-paramparā. It is supported by devotees of the paramparā.
As its first major project, Setutila is developing an open-source critical edition of the collected works (Sarvamūla) of Śrī Madhvācārya, with the aim of producing readings that are as faithful as possible to multiple published editions, manuscripts, and commentarial traditions.
The database utilizes a multi-layered collation methodology to manage variant readings across multiple versions.
1. Primary Layers of the Textual Corpus
We categorize our data into three distinct layers to ensure transparency and user flexibility:
Layer 1: The Base Text (TRK Pāṭha)
The foundational layer consists of a standardized and carefully proofread version of the Sarvamūla granthas, based on the first complete printed edition in modern times. This edition was published by Śrī T. R. Krishnacharya of the Madhva Vilāsa Book Depot, Kumbhakonam, and printed at the Nirṇaya Sāgara Press, Bombay, in Śaka 1833. It was edited by Krishnacharya and Vyāsācārya, the two sons of Toṇape Rāmācārya, and printed by V. R. Ghanekar.
This edition (referred to as TRK Pāṭha) has been adopted as the base text. It has been faithfully reproduced, with only obvious typographical errors corrected, and the rest of the corpus retained as published.
Layer 2: The Variant Layer (BG Pāṭha)
The second layer consists of variant readings drawn from the publication of the Akhila Bhārata Mādhva Mahāmaṇḍala, edited by Śrī Bannanje Govindacharya. This version is significant for its reliance on ancient manuscripts from the coastal Karnataka region.
This version is encoded as BG Pāṭha. As with the base text, only clear typographical errors are ignored, while all other variations are preserved and documented in footnotes.
Only in some cases, for illustrative purposes, footnotes explicitly indicate typographical issues in either TRK or BG editions.
Layer 3: The Critical Layer (Setutila Pāṭha)
An evolving version representing our ongoing critical effort, is called Setutila Pāṭha. While primarily following the TRK base, variant readings (often from the BG edition) are adopted based on specific philological criteria, where there is strong justification. Such decisions are carefully documented in the footnotes.
2. Editorial Criteria for the Setutila Pāṭha
A non-TRK reading is promoted to the Setutila Pāṭha only when supported by:
- Commentarial Authority: Documentation and/or endorsement of variant/s in traditional commentaries.
- Internal Coherence: Superior semantic or contextual fit within the specific work.
- External Corroboration: Alignment with known source texts (e.g., Mahābhārata citations matching standard editions)
This layer is a work in progress and is expected to evolve over the next several years into a comprehensive repository reflecting the full range of variations.
3. Supplementary Sources & Ongoing Verification
The following editions are currently being integrated into the Apparatus Criticus (the critical footnotes):
- An edition published by Śrī Krishnamurthy, printed at Śrī Basavarāja Printing Press, Haveri, likely based on a manuscript dated Śaka 1810 (Belagavi), referred to as U Pāṭha
- The publication of Vyāsamadhva Seva Pratiṣṭhāna, edited by Dr. Vyāsanakere Prabhanjanacharya, referred to as Vyā Pāṭha
Full verification against these sources is ongoing.
4. Technical Philosophy: Non-Prescriptive Access
The SetuTila platform is designed for user autonomy. The database architecture allows users to toggle between the TRK, BG, or Setutila versions of the text. This ensures that while we provide a curated critical reading, the traditional variations remain accessible and non-judged.
Note: In the long run, the repository aims to incorporate additional manuscript evidence for Sarvamūla texts and their commentaries, and further refine the critical apparatus as more sources and resources become available.
